During the summer months of June to August, enrollment in the Dance Troupe increases to 120, excluding those in our general programs. This increase is attributable to the Troupe’s grand entry in Hartford’s August Carnival: this celebration features our exciting dance and elaborate costuming. The summer program
is based on a theme, with costume and dance used to enlighten participants and viewers on the subject. Some students return in the fall, while others repeat summer attendance for many years.

Our facility comes alive with dance, music, costume making, wire bending, stilt walking, float making and general design. The studio becomes a Mecca for activities in preparation for Greater Hartford’s many summer festivals. Students, parents and volunteers are all involved in preparations, including building intricate floats, applying carpentry and decorative painting skills. Master teaching artists are also deployed from Caribbean countries, Florida and New York.

Our enrichment programs allow students to appreciate the arts and history of other cultures, and so gain an understanding of themselves and their community that would not otherwise be possible. The Cultural Dance Troupe’s creative activities help revitalize the region, and provide stimulating activities for inner city children. High quality summer and after school programming is necessary, particularly when parents are at work, and the Troupe is pleased to be able to fill this need.
